For decades, fans of the sport have been treated to some of the most amazing games which has turned NHL into a colossal entity. With the new season not too far away this is your chance to grab tickets for your team’s games and watch them live.

How it all began?
The National Hockey League (NHL) was incepted way back in the year 1917 in place of the National Hockey Association. The place of origin was Canada and NHL ventured to the U.S. for the first time in the middle of 1920’s. The Boston Bruins became the first American NHLrepresentatives. The teams to beat during that era were the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs who established the sport’s first successful dynasties.

Gradually the sport started to gain attention of the masses and that increased the level of play. The mid 1930’s saw the Chicago Blackhawks become the first team to field a team made up of Americans only.  The 1942-1943 campaign began with only six teams the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red WingsNew York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks. This group of teams was dubbed the “Original Six.

For over the next two decades these six teams went head to head for the Stanley Cup. The rivalries got very intense and the profile of the NHLlevels higher than ever before.  The NHL All-Starsgame made its debut during that time frame as well in the year 1947. The early 1950’s saw the game being broadcasted by major networks which took NHLfurther than it had ever gone before. Later that year in 1958 Willie O’Ree became the first African-American player in ice hockey when he joined up with the Boston Bruins.

What Happened Next? The legacies created by the Original Six turned the sport on its head. The rivalries, the records and the level of play turned NHLinto one of the most watched sporting leagues in North America. It was decided that six new teams be added to the league as expansion franchises in 1966. Four of those sides, the Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings are still playing in the NHL. Prior to the 1970-1971 season another two franchises the Buffalo Sabres and the Vancouver Canucks joined the ranks as well.

That not only expanded the field and took the sport to new cities but also gave hockey a new dimension and a broader appeal. The World Hockey League then came up in the early 1970’s. The two leagues went head to head and more the likes of New York Islanders and Washington Capitals were added to the NHL. The WHL went under in 1977 and Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, Hartford Whalers and the Edmonton Oilers came to the NHL.

The New York Islanders, the Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers dominated the NHL in 1970’s and 1980’s. The 1990’s was s decade that belonged to the Oilers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils and the Detroit Red Wings.

The 2000’s have been incredibly competitive with the likes of Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins all winning the Stanley Cup since 2000. The latest campaign also promises to be a humdinger so grab the tickets and back your team, live.
