NFL

NFL , or National Football League,is considered the most watched league in the US. The governing league of American Football has played its part in turning the sports into one of the most followed sports in the world. Its championship game, the Super Bowl, stands on the second spot on the list of the most watched events of the year. Millions of fans make their way to football stadiums every year to support their favorite teams. It’s no wonder then the demand of NFL tickets never goes away.

How it all began?

The NFL can trace its roots back to 1920. It was incepted when four teams Dayton Triangles, Cleveland Indians, Canton Bulldogs and Akron Pros came together to lay the foundation of the American Professional Football Association. Two years, later the name was changed to the National Football League. The league suffered from a lot of financial meltdowns for the first few years but the management stuck at it and it wasn’t long before it began to capture the imagination of the masses.

Slowly but surely, the NFL gathered momentum and by the time 1950’s and 1960’s came around, it had become one of the most watched leagues in the country. It faced its first serious competition when the American Football League (AFL) came to the fore in 1960. The two leagues went head-to-head in terms of talent and sponsorship deals but the NFL prevailed in the end which resulted in the merger of the two entities.

The NFLis a success story that is borne out of a meeting of four small teams. The success has been made possible by fans as well as the teams that have continuously raised the bar in terms of on-field excellence to give football fans one epic game after another. The Green Bay Packers won the first couple of Super Bowls in 1960’s. The Pittsburgh Steelers then followed them and dominated the next decade along with Miami Dolphins who won back to back titles in 1973 and 1974.

The San Francisco 49ers stepped up and made the 1990’s their period of success. The Dallas Cowboys weren’t too far behind and have since gone on to become the third most valued sports team in the world. The New England Patriots went to the top of the mountain by clinching three Super Bowls between 2002 and 2005. The current champions, the Baltimore Ravens, started this millennium by lifting the Super Bowl in 2000. It is the success enjoyed by these teams that has gone a long way in turning NFL into the global behemoth it is today.

NFL’s Structure:
The NFL’s current structure comprises of the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Both conferences are divided into four divisions each named East, South, North and West. Each division contains four teams.
The players draft and NFL preseason games get a lot of attention from media and fans but the real excitement begins after divisional finals. The division champions are the teams who have the best overall record during the regular seasons. These four teams from both conferences make their way to the playoffs also known as the post season.

The teams are seeded one to four according to their records. They are joined by two wild card entrants from each conference, which are the teams with the next best records. These teams are seeded number five and six. The first round is called the Wild Card Playoffs and the team seeded third among the division champions takes on the side seeded sixth and the team on the fourth spot goes up against the fifth seed wild card entrant.

The top two from AFC and NFC automatically go to the second round also known as the Divisional Playoffs. The top seeded side takes on the lowest seeded team from the previous round whereas the other two complete the line-up for the other game. The two winning teams from each conference then go on to face each other for their respective conference titles. The two AFC and NFC title holders then make their way to headline the prestigious Super Bowl.
