MLB

Major League Baseball (MLB) is a league that governs the sport of baseball in the USA and Canada. Considered as one of biggest sports leagues of the region, it presents some epic encounters of baseball every year. The MLB season brings with it countless emotions that vary from joy to despair and baseball fans remain hooked to the games from start till end.

How it all began?

MLBcan trace its roots back to the year 1869 with the arrival of the sport’s first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The early part of the next decade saw teams like Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs being formed. The National League (NL) was incepted in 1876 and that is when baseball started to gain popularity. NL faced its first severe competition from the Western League now known as American League.

The AL was formed in 1901 and kick-started a rivalry that was to last for an entire century. There was a lot of animosity between the two leagues but even their management sat down in 1903 to agree that champions of both the AL and NL will headline the World Series to determine the best team in the sport.

A proper structure allowed the players and the fans to concentrate on the game itself.  Teams like the Chicago Cubs, New York Giants and Philadelphia Athletics (now Oakland Athletics) began to make their presence felt as the first major forces of the sport. Legendary player Babe Ruth joined the Boston Red Sox in 1914. He would later move to the New York Yankees. His exploits with both the teams made him baseball’s first global star.

The sport grew from strength to strength and MLB reached another milestone in the 1940’s when Jackie Robinson became the first colored player to play baseball at the highest level for the NL’s Brooklyn Dodgers. He was soon followed by Larry Doby who signed up for the Cleveland Indians and as a result became the first American-African player. MLB began its first expansion in 1950’s. A lot of teams were moved to new cities and major realignment took place and that took the league to a whole host of new cities. AL and NL went toe-to-toe for over a century before coming together in 2000 as a single entity.

Teams like the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers have captured more than one World Series titles and have more than played their part in turning MLB into a worldwide phenomenon.

NFL’s Structure

Once the regular season ends then the three top teams from both the NL and the AL make it to the playoffs where they are joined by two wild card sides from each league. The best of five division series follow for both the NL and the AL. The triumphant teams then make their way to their respective League’s best of seven series championship game. The winners of the two leagues then headline the World Series to earn the right to be crowned the best in the sport.
