National Hockey League
The National Hockey League (NHL) consists of ice hockey teams in North America that are all professional teams. The NHL is known by its French name as well: Ligue Nationale de Hockey (LNH). The NHL is a premier professional ice hockey league, and it is also known as one of North America’s main professional sports leagues. The NHL is separated into two conferences that consist of fifteen teams each. Each conference has three divisions consisting of five teams.
History:
The NHL was established in Montreal [1917] with just five teams. It expanded to 30 teams, out of which 24 are from America, and the remaining are from Canada. Since this sport originated from Canada, there are quite a few players that come from there.
The NHL was born out of a dispute that arose in the Canadian National Hockey Association (NHA). The disputes were between owner of the Toronto Blueshirts, Eddie Livingstone, and other team owners. Soon after this, Montreal Wanderers, the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and Quebec Bulldogs converged at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal. They talked about the NHA's future, and these discussions gradually transformed into the concept of a National Hockey League. The first teams in this league were the Canadiens, Wanderers, Senators, and the then newly-created Toronto Arenas. The Toronto Arenas today are known as the Maple Leafs.
While the NHL struggled to stay in operation, the teams performed well. 1925 was the only year during that period when a team outside the NHL won the Stanley Cup. In the following year, there was not a single team other than NHL teams performing in the cup. Around this period, the NHL started to expand. The process of expansion was as follows:
the Boston Bruins became the first U.S.-based NHL franchise
Montreal Maroons joined the league [1924–25]
the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Americans joined the league [1925–26]
the Detroit Cougars (now known as the Red Wings), the New York Rangers, and the Chicago Black Hawks joined the league [1926–27]
This brought the number of teams in the league up to 10.
Two major forces during the 1930s and 1940s affected the NHL. These were the Great Depression and the Second World War. Due to these two factors, the NHL shrunk to six teams. These included the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks, the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers. These remained the six playing members in the National Hockey League for the next 25 years.
Hockey rink:
All National Hockey League matches games have to be played on a rink that has specific measurements. It should be 25.91 by 60.92 metres or 85 by 200. In contrast to these measurements, international standards recommend a rink measuring 60–61 metres long by 29–30 metres wide or 196.85–200.13 ft by 95.14–98.43 ft.
The center line of the rink bisects the ice. This line is made use of to determine icing violations. There are also two blue lines that separate the icing rink roughly into thirds. These thirds are the two attacking zones and one neutral zone.
Near about both ends of the rink, there is a fine red goal line. This spans the width of the ice, and it is use for determining goals and icing calls.
Popularity:
In the USA, the NHL is quite popular alongside the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association. Hockey is said to have the least fan base among these four. It also has the lowest television dollars generated, and the lowest sponsorship.
In contrast to the USA, in Canada hockey is said to be the most popular of the four sports. It also benefits from selling the highest number of tickets. The NHL fan base largely comprises the most affluent and educated fans. This is why NHL season ticket prices are known to be higher than the other sport league ticket prices.
