National Basketball Association
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league. The NBA is a member of the USA Basketball (USAB). The FIBA recognizes the USAB as a National Governing Body for this sport in the U.S.
The NBA was established in New York City, United States [June 6, 1946]. It was first known as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). In 1949, the name was changed to the ‘National Basketball Association’. This was after it merged with the rival National Basketball League.
The same individuals that owned major sports arenas in the Northeast and Midwest United States owned the Basketball Association of America. There were attempts made earlier at professional leagues. These were in the form of the American Basketball League and the National Basketball League. However, the BAA remained the first league to play primarily in large arenas. It must be noted that the standard of performance in the BAA was below competing leagues. or among leading independent clubs such as the Harlem Globetrotters. The Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers on November 1, 1946. This game is regarded as the first game to be played in the league's history.
History:
The BAA merged with the NBL on August 3, 1949. This elaborated the National Basketball Association to seventeen franchises. These were distributed in large and small cities. They were also spread to large arenas, smaller gymnasiums and armories.
Between 1950 and 1954, the NBA shrunk from eleven franchises to eight franchises. However, it has maintained all these till today. They include Warriors, Lakers, the Knickerbockers, Celtics, Royals/Kings, Pistons, Hawks, and Nationals/76ers.
June 29, 2006 was the day basketball saw a change made in the ball in more than 35 years. The introduction of the new ball took place in the 2006-07 season. The new ball had been manufactured by Spalding. This company claimed that the new ball had a better design and batter synthetic material that improves grip, feel, and consistency compared to the previous one ball. At this point, many players said that the new ball was too sticky when dry. They also said that it was too slippery when wet. With all these complaints as well as the fact that players began suffering hand injuries, Commissioner Stern announced that as of January 1, 2007, the NBA would revert to using the traditional leather basketball. This was announced on December 11, 2006. The Players Association, however, filed a case on behalf of the players versus the NBA’s introduction of the new ball.
Teams:
The NBA initially had 11 teams when it was established in 1946. It currently has 30 teams, [29 are based in the U.S. while 1 is from Canada]. Out of all these teams, the Boston Celtics have been the most successful franchise. It has a record of 16 NBA Finals wins. Second to the Boston Celtics is the Los Angeles Lakers, with 14 championships to their credit. Next comes the Chicago Bulls that has 6 championships. The Chicago Bulls won these in just an 8-year span in the 1990s. The Miami Heat is the current defending champion, and it won its first championship in 2006.
Regular season:
After the summer break, teams go through training camps in October. During these camps, coaches evaluate players, especially new players and younger talent. They also scout for team strengths and weaknesses, and prepare team players for a tough season ahead. A 12-member team is selected, and there are also 3 reserves. Teams are allowed to assign players to the NBA development league even if they have less than two years experience. After the camp, preseason exhibition games are hosted. After this, in the first week of November, the NBA regular season begins.
NBA steroid policy:
The NBA has a strict steroid policy. It has toughened its stance on steroid use in recent seasons. First time abusers of performance-enhancing drugs can face a 10-game penalty. If they are caught again, they can face a 25-game penalty. The third time they are caught, they can receive a one-year suspension. If they are caught one more time, they will be expelled from the league.
