Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball (MLB) is the professional and highest level of baseball. It also refers to the organization that governs the National League and the American League in
North American professional baseball.
The American and National leagues were officially disbanded in 2000. They, since then, were considered as separate legal entities. MLB currently operates as a single league. It remains a constituent of the major professional sports leagues of North America.
The Major League baseball season starts in March – April, and carries on till September- October. Teams prepare for the season clashes in spring training. There are three rounds of playoffs after the regular season is over, and these finish with the World Series that takes place in late October.
Major League Baseball uniforms:
All players in Major League Baseball have to wear matching uniforms. This rule is a new inclusion, as teams were not required to do so when the league was first formed. In those days, teams were differentiated by the colors of the socks or stockings they wore. Following the Cincinnati Red Stockings, other teams wore distinctive colors so that they could be identified on the field. The National League designated stocking colors to its member clubs in 1882. Boston had to wear red, Chicago had to wear white, Buffalo had to wear grey, Worcester wore blue, Detroit wore gold, Troy wore green, and the list goes on. Additionally, the year that teams were assigned specific colors of socks, the league also made it compulsory for team members to wear assigned jersey and cap colors.
All-Star Game:
The mid point of the season is somewhere in early July. At this point, there is a three-day break, and a Major League Baseball All-Star Game is held. This game includes NL players, with the manager of the previous NL World Series team. They face players from the AL, similarly managed, to play an exhibition match. This game is very popular, and it is treated as an important one of the season.
National broadcasts:
Major League Baseball is in an evolutionary stage, and it effectively has three current broadcast partners that will remain with it from the 2007 season onwards. FOX Sports continues to be with MLB through 2013. It broadcasts FOX Saturday Baseball throughout the season. FOX also has rights to the All-Star Game every season. FOX will carry on broadcasting all matches of the World Series.
Historical major leagues:
The Special Baseball Records Committee officially recognized six "major leagues" in history, of which four are defunct, and two are still in operation. They are listed below:
The National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs: 1876
American Association: 1882–1891
Union Association: 1884
Players League: 1890
American League: 1901
Federal League: 1914–1915
Major League baseball continues to be one of the favorite sports in the United States. The major league is fuelled by interest and enthusiasm for the sport at school level. The more it is encouraged and supported at school and college level, the high standards of the sport will always be maintained. Also, fan interest is now also supported by the electronic media, which means that in recent years there has been greater coverage, and subsequently, more support for the game.
